Bluestem Homes Association is a beautiful neighborhood located in Overland Park, KS.  It has approximately 60 acres of greenspace and native prairie on the SE Corner of 151st & Quivira.  The amenities offered in the community include a neighborhood pool, playground, basketball court, and pond surrounded by a walking trail.

Important Information

I feel a need to post information as I understand it around fishing in our pond.
Our water quality is such that we would strongly advise people to not eat any fish caught in our pond. It is a runoff water retention reservoir. Our water quality is impacted by things outside of our neighborhood. Ice in the winter will never be strong enough to allow fishing.

We have posted “no fishing” signs. They were put up by decision of the Board before my time in the neighborhood. I have asked those that are here that were on the board at that time and they tell the same reason for the signs. They wanted to stop the fishing that was happening at the time by many from outside of our subdivision. This has been effective in limiting much of the fishing outside of our residents.

We can not mow the grass areas around the pond because we are filed for with the city for most of our common areas to be natural areas, including those around the pond. Your board has been dealing with the city on what needs to be left natural and what can be mowed since March. We are allowed a couple access points to the pond mowing areas around the pond. We have communicated this to our mowing company. The city initially were managing us to manage the no fishing by all. I pushed back in May telling the city what I had discovered and that is how we would handle until they could find proof of filed fishing restrictions.

So, not having cleared areas around the pond does make it not fishing friendly, but it is necessary. Our residents are allowed to fish from the banks of the pond despite the signs. We will have a couple mowed areas around the pond that will provide better lake access for fishing. We ask that those fishing be respectful of the natural area around them and as good outdoor sports people that they leave the area in good shape when they are done.

Thanks,
